It might be a bold statement but have a look at their start, out of 8 games played; they have won 5, lost 1 and drawn 2 times. They are currently fifth on the premier league standings, with one game in hand.

Mark Hughes is a very happy man, to see his team winning the few battles; most notable one was against Arsenal and that too in style. There were questions, whether Mark Hughes has the key to unlock the roadblocks and whether Manchester City will emerge as a powerful team, which can pose a serious threat for Premier League title 2009-10. However, after few weeks into the premier league 2009-2010, many experts and football pundits would surely reassess their predictions.

The citizens had the busiest summer in their history, spending over £150million in strengthening their squad. The ambitious dream of the owner Sheikh Mansour has made the Sky Blues to spend heavily in building their squad and have made solid acquisitions like Emmanuel Adebayor (£25 million), Carlos Tevez (£47 million) Roque Santa Cruz (£17.5 million), Joleon Lescott (£24 million), Kolo Toure (£16 million) and Gareth Barry (£12 million).

The Sparky has done two things right in early part of the season. The primary battle was to have a successful transfer market, and he has cleared the test with flying colors. The Sky Blues managed to acquire their potential targets (excluding the audacious Kaka deal or linking with host of other players like Samuel Eto or Thierry Henry and many more) and now Mark Hughes has a strong, experienced, balanced squad to bank on. The Second battle was to start the premier league season on a high note, and they have done it successfully with four wins out of four games. From here on the onus is on the Sky Blues to show consistency and win vital battles against fewer competitive teams, if they are to challenge the premier league title.

The club has a huge squad with quality and depth, which will help them to conquer crucial battles. The Sky Blues have quality defenders like Joleon Lescott, Kolo Toure or midfielders like Stephen Ireland, Vincent Kompany, Nigel de Jong, Gareth Barry or forwards like Robinho, Carlos Tevez and Emmanuel Adebayor are all experienced and capable of winning challenges, that lies ahead for Manchester City. It will be interesting to see how they perform the first half of the season, and if they are placed second or third on the premier league table until December, then you know Sheiks are ready to infuse more millions into the squad.

The next test comes at this weekend when they will face a stern competition against their Fulham at Craven cottage in London. The Sky blues will hope to shrug off their last draw against Wigan Athletic and hope to get a victory against Roy Hogson side. The ‘Sparky’ will be looking to end their patchy league form, winning just one in their last four league matches and hoping to secure a fourth spot.

It’s a know fact that a lot is expected out of the wealthiest football club in the world. The Citizen’s fans are excited and have huge expectations from the club to win silverware this season. It might be too early to predict but the Welshman has surely passed the first road block (to have a great start), and now it is certain that they will definitely play a decisive role in the premier league title.

What do you think Are Manchester City a genuine title contender or closest title challengers to Chelsea along with Manchester United and Arsenal? Tough times for the Reds and the Anfield faithful is still asking questions : Can Liverpool overcome Manchester United on Sunday?

Liverpool was defeated by Lyon during the mid-week in a UEFA champion's league encounter at Anfield, and now it appears that Benitez will have a painful exercise in selecting his squad ahead of Sunday's action. The official squad is not yet declared, but we confirm that Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres are not avaliable for the game due to their injury concerns.

In contrast, for Manchester Untied the only worry will be the unavailability of Wayne Rooney, who picked up a calf injury playing for England and has not yet recovered from the injury.

Liverpool is currently 8th on the premier league table while Manchester United is currently holding the top position. This will be one of the most interesting clashes, so far in the premier league, and it will be an epic war at both ends. The war is structured at the time when Liverpool supporters plan a protest against their American owners.

Surely, it won't be easy for Manchester United, to play their usual game because Liverpool will have their 12th man on the pitch and that will be their superb supporters. The Red Devils should expect nothing less than a hostile and emotional reception from Liverpool supporters.

FE expects Liverpool to bounce back after their fourth straight loss and expects Liverpool to get atleast point from Sunday's fixture.

FE Desk: 1-1 (Moderate Prediction)

West Ham United V Arsenal

Arsenal has 27 premier league goals, just after eight games, a record, which will make Arsene Wenger happy on his 60th Birthday. The Professor has won last two games at the Upton Park and this time he will expect young gunners to fire.

Arsenal will be without Theo Walcott, but it is expected that the French tactician will put up a strong line-up against West Ham United. Players like Andrei Arshavin, Cecs Fabregas, Robin Van Persie and Tomas Rosicky are all available for the Sunday's game.

In contrast, West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola will be without Dean Ashton and Luis Boa Morte due to injury concerns and Scott Parker missing due to suspension. The Italian manager is under pressure to get West Ham from the relegation zone, who are currently 19th on the premier league table, with just five points from 8 league games.

The Hammers will be looking forward to bouncing back from their defeat, but Arsenal will be a strong force to reckon with. Will the Hammers be able to revive their season, who are up against in-form Arsenal team? It looks unlikely and FE expects the Gunners to trash West Ham United in a London Derby match.

FE Desk: 1-3 (Aggresive Prediction)

Chelsea V Blackburn Rovers

'I want to get over last weekend Blues' Boys get me a result' Carlos Ancelotti - Is that lingering on your mind Mr. Bond. Well please don't worry as your men thrashed Atletico Madrid by 4-0 and that's some way to bounce back after a sloppy defeat against Aston Villa last weekend.

Another good news for Chelsea's fans, Didier Drogba will be available for Saturday's clash against Rovers. This will be a great opportunity for Chelsea to top the premier league table, at least for a day, before Manchester United plays their game against Liverpool on Sunday.

Blackburn will be without Di Santo, who scored his first Blackburn goal last weekend, due to a clause in his loan, which prevents him from playing against the parent club Chelsea.

It will be difficult for Sam Allardyce to ensure that his team repeats, last week performance and FE expects Chelsea's a thumping victory.

FE Desk: 3-0 (Aggresive Prediction)

So sit back and Enjoy with your Popcorn!!!

Birthday' Boy : Arsene Wenger - Wish Him All The Success!!!

By Football Editorial

'Fly ArseneWenger', we wish Arsene Wenger a very Happy 60th Birthday and just like he was given a standing ovation That's what Arsene Wenger is wondering, right now! Reports in English media confirm that the Professor is currently monitoring 3 players and the most notable one is Inter Milan's highly rated striker Mario Balotelli.

The son of Ghanaian immigrants, born in the city of Palermo, playing for Italians is highly rated Inter Milan striker. At 19, he is tipped by Italian media as next generation superstars. The young striker is highly regarded by Inter boss Jose Mourinho, who is known for his pace and technical ability, who can play anywhere along the front line.

Reports suggest that Arsenal scout was in Italy to watch the game played between Inter Milan and Geneo, last weekend, suggesting the Professor keen interest in the young striker. The Inter hit man is valued at £20million.

The Italian is understood to be getting frustrated due to lack of opportunities, at Inter Milan. The arrival of Gabriel Milito and Samuel Eto'o in the summer has further dented his first team chances. Mario Balotelli might consider a London move, in order to bolster his first team chances and improve his chances to be in the FIFA World Cup 2010 squad, in South Africa.

It's no secret that, the Frenchman wants to add a striker in his attacking line-up. After the departure of Emmanuel Adebayour, Arsenal was linked to French born Moroccan striker Marouane Chamakh, who almost signed Arsenal during summer, until the move was blocked by the Bordeaux. Arsenal already has hosts of strikers like Robin Van Persie, Eduardo, Carlos Vela, Andrei Arshavin and Nicklas Bendtner.

Recent reports suggest that Arsene Wenger, has once again rekindled his interest in the Moroccan striker and the Professor wants to seal this transfer in January.

There has been strong speculation that Arsenal are monitoring the progress of Dutchman Gregory van der Weil, who at 21, has capped five times for his country and his already hailed as a great right-back. A January move could be on the cards, but the Professor will have to splash £8million to land Ajax hitman.

The Gunners are once again hitting headlines and stories of a possible move have crept up in media. Will Arsene Wenger sign Mario Balotelli, Marouane Chamakh or Gregory van der Weil?

May be, all of them...hmm sounds good.

Please share your thoughts.

Top Three Managers Of English Premier League

By Jigar Shah

Since the inception, English premier league had hundreds of managers. 20 teams battle the fight of survival down the wire, until the final day of the season and the stress and tautness is easily seen on the face of 20 managers. The position of the manager is such a high profile job, but it comes with instability and pressure- two or three back to back defeat in a row and your reign as manager is ended. It’s hard to survive, but some of the managers have enjoyed incredible success on the pitch like Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger, Rafael Benitez, Davis Moyes etc. In this edition of Football Editorials we shall bring you the best three managers in the English Premier League.

We don’t evaluate the success just by winning titles and glories. It’s the overall effort that helps you achieve the top position. Here is the list of top three managers, currently serving top position in the English Premier League.

Sir Alex Ferguson – Number One

Profile

Club: Manchester United

Nationality: Scottish

Nickname: Fergie

Premier League manager of the year: 9 times

Joined: since 1986

The Scottish is the longest serving manager in the history of English Premier League, yes 23 years and still going strong. He is probably one of the world’s best managers, not only responsible for the achievement, but the development of the players and the club (globally) as well. He is the backbone at the Old Trafford and an icon for many young managers. He is straight forward, strict, discipline and many people associated with the game call him furious fergie.

Why we rate him number one?

Titles Won: 13 Premier League

FA Cup: 5 times

League Cup: 3 Times

Community Shield: 8 Times

UEFA Champions League: Twice

His name is synonymous with success and there is no room for failure. He is temperamental and never felt shy to get on his stars back; like Beckham, Ronaldo or Rooney. He is responsible for creating players like Beckham, Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Peter Scmeichel, Scholes, Giggs, and many more.

Another reason is his belief in youth and bringing the right players at the right time. There is a great development within the club’s academy and the proof is talented players like Rafael or Macheda or Evans showing maturity on the pitch. He lives to the occasion and shows hunger for trophies, season after season. Even after the defeat, last season at the hands of Barca in the finals of the champion’s league, he is ready to go again.

Prediction for Current Season: 2nd finish

Europa League: Semi Final

Arsene Wenger: Number Two

Profile

Club: Arsenal FC

Nationality: French

Nickname: The Professor

Premier League manager of the year: 3 times

The professor is currently serving his 13 year, and he is responsible for changing all around attitude around the club, since taking charge of the office. Wenger is Arsenal’s first manager from outside U.K, proved to be an instant success at the club. He is probably highest paid manager in the premier league approx £ 4.5 million. He is known for his philosophy for the game and his is an ardent follower of the young talented players.

Why we rate him number two?

Titles Won: 3 Premier League

FA Cup: 4 times

Community Shield: 4 Times

UEFA Champions League: Runner-up

His accomplishment might not be as successful as fergie, but what he has achieved with his young boys is highly commendable. He is one of those managers which manage to bring most out of limited resources. He believes in grooming players and never spends heavily on players unlike other managers in the league. Arsenal’s most expensive player is Andrei Arshavin approx £15 million, this suggest that he prefers development over instant success. He is not as lucky as his compatriots in terms of money, (wonder when was last time Arsene had a kitty of £ 50 million to spend) but he has brought players like Henry, Fabregas, Tony Adams, Vieira, Walcott and many more.

He might not be a great tactician, but his faith and conviction in young players are superb. He is unlucky in terms of availability of players, as in last few seasons his players had injury problems at the wrong part of the season. I hope the jinx is finally broken and Arsene achieves what he hasn’t so far – Europa League.

Prediction for Current Season: 3rd finish

Europa League: Semi Final

Davis Moyes – Number Three

Profile

Club: Everton FC

Nationality: Scottish

Nickname: Moyesy

The Scottish, currently serving his 7 year, has not won any premier league title or F.A cup during his reign, but he was awarded LMA manager of the year award thrice. He deserves to be on this list, given the budget, injurious and narrow squad of Everton.

Why we rate him number three?

At 46, he has achieved a tremendous success with the club. Many believe he has ability to be a great manager and some experts have even tipped Moyes to be a successor of Sir Alex. He has worked hard and cleverly signed players Lescott, Arteta, Cahill, Phil Neville, Jagielka and Yakubu. He has produced a team full of character, spirit and passion on the pitch. He has consistently led the club a top six finish over the years. (Last season, toffees reached the finals of F.A Cup losing out to Chelsea by 2-1) Toffees may not play stylish, free flowing football, but they win and get results the hard way.

The Goodison Park owes a lot to this Scottish and arguably best manager in the premier league. He is cool, calm and comes up with results under limited resources. He is one of the finest young managers, and surely has the long way to go!!!

Prediction for Current Season: 7th finish

UEFA Cup: Round of 16

Have your say!!!

Indian Tadka: Here We Go – Time To Build Tomorrow!!!

By Jigar Shah

History Created

We saw amazing pictures, a few weeks ago, of our men in blue winning an enthralling match against Syria. A treat to watch happy and smiling faces of Indian Football players including, coach Bob Houghton. Indian football owes a lot to Mr. Bhutia, India’s first footballer to complete 100th game and rightly the coach showering accolades for our captain by saying “India lucky to have a Bhutia”.

You cannot single out his performance, but players like Mahesh Gawli, Subrata Paul, Renedy Singh, Climax Lawrence and many other performed well and deserved to get much needed media attention. I was happy to see significant space given by electronic media to ONGC Nehru Cup winners 2009. After many years, we have seen Indian Football team making headlines on the front pages of every newspaper and sports magazines. An incredible match played in front of 20,000 Indian football fans in Ambedkar Stadium and watching your national team winning on dramatic penalty shootout was icing on the cake.

The Present

India’s victory over Syrians in the Finals of ONGC Nehru Cup 2009 has helped India to achieve new heights in Indian Football and from here on I hope things should get better. First, the improvement in the ranking is a positive sign, although our highest FIFA ranking was 94 in the year 1996. The current team might have won accolades but in realty All India Football Federation (AIFF) need to bring a lot of developments in coming years.

“Here, a look at some facts and recent statements:

Few days back, AFC president Manilal Fernando mentioned that he is not happy with the way I-League is governed and if the sate of affairs is not changed then I-League may have to face strict action.

Mr. Baichung Bhutia, who has 14 years long career, reiterated that AIFF needs to get tough with I-league clubs in order to make them to adhere to the norms of Asian Football Confederation (AFC) for making the game truly professional in India.

One of the startling facts, which is hard to digest, in a recent study by football writer Simon Kuper and leading sports economist Stefan Szymanski says India is possibly a worst football team.”

Some of the above facts are hard to digest and as an ardent football fan I believe that time has arrived where we can build a new era; a new beginning to build a robust tomorrow for Indian Football. The victory over Syrians might prove to be a landmark, which Indian Football needed, and I hope from here on we achieve more glories.

Way to Improve…

Good Governance – We Need Few Good Men

Please all the bureaucrats should quit the prestigious job of administering football at the state and club level. Indian football doesn’t need autocratic and stubborn behavior of state officials; instead we need few good men (ex-football players) who can professionally conduct our football with integrity and diligence.

Better Stadiums – We Need Infrastructure

Broken seats, smelly toilets, lack of facilities and more important terrible surface to play on - it’s absolutely frustrating (except Salt Lake Stadium). I wish I had an Aladdin wonderful Lamp so that I can rub and ask djinni to change the pathetic state of stadiums in India. Look at the condition of Cooperage ground; it is not at all pleasing?

Create Stars - Time to Give Credit

Unfortunately, Football has not created demigods like Cricket in India, and we need to build some stars who can give us better tomorrow. I think time has come where we should give some credit, and I am glad the kind of coverage our boys been getting since Nehru Cup triumph. Please we need more Baichung Bhutia for taking our football to the next level.

Marketing – Reach Out

It’s a cliché that Indian Football is not marketed well, but in realty quality sells like hot cakes. We need to create all round quality to sell our product. In India, there is a significant surge in the popularity of EPL in the last two years, due to the exposure of European Football on sports channels and most followers would love to watch EPL over the weekend than local games on DD sports and that is purely due to quality and marketing. So the fact remains that we need to build quality in order to market our football to the next level. I think adding glamour like our Brand Ambassador Salman Khan might be a good marketing gimmick by AIFF.

Banking on Youth – We Need Academies

In every football country, there are football academies and it’s the responsibility of clubs to look after and nurture young talents. If we need to build better future than we have to start promoting football seriously at school levels, with proper facilities, so that clubs from various parts of the country provide national players, not restricting it to one or two regional clubs.

There have been recent developments, for instance, AIFF acting President Praful Patel is trying his level best to pump in more money into the game, a recent grant given by BCCI of INR 250 million, a recent government backing of ‘2011Goal Project’ around 40 crore and by adding some glamour i.e making Salman Khan as football brand ambassador, are all positive signs, but I hope a lot more ground level efforts are undertaken (as mentioned above) by AIFF in order to see India perform well in the 2011 Asian Cup in Doha.

As a true Football fan I would love to have answers to these questions, Can Indian Football match European Standards? Will India Ever Qualify for World Cup? I am not aware how long it might take, but I can certainly wish that India competes at the top level during my lifetime.

What do you think is the most important thing that Indian Football needs - Good Governance, Better Stadiums, Stars, Youth or Marketing? Share your views

Rafa’s Life ‘At Risk’ After Losing Due To a ‘Freak Goal’ At The Stadium Of Lights

By Jigar Shah

Baffled Rafa Benitez says he is going to put up his strongest possible line-up against Lyon after the Sunderland freak goal show. The next two games are probably the most crucial games in Rafa’s life at Liverpool. First –it’s Lyon and next weekend it’s Manchester United, it could either be a blessing in disguise or a double whammy for the Spaniard.

The frustration was easily seeming, as Mr. Tinkerman involved in an ugly spat with Sunderland Boss Steve Bruce after the phantasmagoric goal from the Black Cats striker Darren Bent whose shot that took a deflection past Pepe Reina via a red beach ball thrown on to the pitch by a visiting fan.

This is Liverpool's fourth premier league defeat and this one could hammer their Premier League Title hopes. Football Editorial did their part before the kick-off, predicting an away draw for Liverpool, but the defeat was not in our script.

The Reds are currently eighth on the premier league standing, and it looks that their title hopes are in serious jeopardy after losing to the Black Cats at the weekend. The worst is Liverpool have not scored in their last three games, Fiorentina, Chelsea and Sunderland, which will put immense pressure on the Kop boss, Rafael Benitez.

The Spaniard took over in 2004-05 as Liverpool boss and since then, a number of times there have been concerns over Spaniard’s future at the Merseyside club. The Spaniard has won a Champions League, European Super Cup, FA Community Shield and FA Cup during his tenure, so far, with Liverpool. The last time Anfield faithful saw silverware was during 2006 FA Community Shield, when they beat Chelsea 2-1, since then its chasing shadows for them. However, the Spaniard ended his long running speculation by signing a new five year contract with Liverpool, that keeps him at the club till 2014, during this summer.

The Spaniard is known for his tactical acumen, his especially during European clashes, but also criticized for his rotational policy by Liverpool fans. The Spaniard will be under a ‘serious pressure’ first time in the season and the only silver lining for him is the availability of Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres for the mid-week clash against French powerhouse Lyon.

After weekend clash with the Black Cats; one thing is proved for sure that Liverpool attack without Steven Gerrard and Fernando Torres is toothless and lacks cutting edge. Just Imagine Steve Bruce saying during his post match interview “I thought we deserved it. We had three one-on-ones in the second-half and could have scored more”.

Yes, it’s true Liverpool played badly, and they will surely need to pull up their sleeves if they have to win anything this season. The Spaniard didn’t have much transfer activity due to financial crunch; and the fact is the squad needs a lot of strengthening. (FYI: The Merseyside club has brought players like Glen Johnson (£18 million) and Alberto Aquilani (£17million) to strengthen their squad. )

A plethora of football experts thought that this season Liverpool can claim a title, but I believe with the departure of irreplaceable Xabi Alonso, the team is struggling a bit, this season, especially in the creative department. Even Mr. Dependable Steven Gerrard hasn’t struck his best form yet.

In the end, I can only say maybe it’s a mixture of bad luck and bad performance, but it is high time Liverpool should raise their game or else face a risk of losing any silverware this season. Liverpool fans believe in Spaniard, and they know that he has a lot of work before their next two games home games.

Please share your thoughts!!!

Football Players and Their Nicknames – The ‘Lighter’ Side of Superstars

By Jigar Shah

Cristiano Ronaldo – Poster Boy

It is difficult to pick a nickname for this guy; because he's got many such names, diver, flamboyant, winker, mamma's boy etc. The best is to call him ‘Poster Boy’ of modern day football.

Eduardo – The Scapegoat

Hey, I am not a diver! Perhaps, he is still lingering!

I guess he might have asked his mom to tell him some mid-night stories after that incident. Poor Croatian learned how people make the mountain of a mole.

Carlos Ancelotti – Mr. Bond

He needs to attend few English lessons; but the man from Italy has certainly impressed English media with his suave looks. The makers of ‘Bond’ movie might consider him next time!!! Hope you are listening Mr. Daniel Craig.

Jose Mourinho – The Faff’er

The Portuguese is one of the most controversial and interesting managers in the history of English Premier League. Mr. Big mouthed likes to give debatable quotes to the media and he is one of the most obnoxious coaches around the world. English media loved him and almost mourned, a day after he left to Italy.

Now it's Italian media, and Jose Mourinho says he hates dealing with the Italian press. Guys, please give him some space, after all he is 'The Special One'
Love him, or hate him’, but you can’t ignore him!!!

Craig Bellamy – Street Fighter

Please give him a ring so that he can fight.

No more training ground or on field busts up. I guess he has a good alternative job after he gets retired from football. I hope WWE guys are watching Mr. Street Fighter!

Cecs Fabregas – Mr. Cool

The Spanish ace is cool as cucumber and a breath of fresh air. He stays away from controversies, keeps his game clean and fights like a captain. The Gunners captain has taken his game to a next level, this season for Arsenal and Spain, and I hope he continues to get better and better.

Dirk Kuyt – The Horse

The Dutchman is one of the hardest working players in the premier league. He works hard and runs like a horse with one thing on his mind – dribble the ball through opposition's defence.

Wayne Rooney – The Beautiful Bald

The Englishman is firing all cylinders on the pitch, but he has some hairy issues. No matter what he looks like but we all love watching him, Right?

Emmanueal Adebayor – Man with a Vengeance

After his extended celebration and stamping his former team mate Robin Van Persie; one can easily say, he has a lot on his mind. No matter what he says to defend him, but he's got some arrogance on his head. Watch out buddy, before it explodes!!!

Thierry Henry – The Lumber

The Frenchmen may be a legend at the Arsenal F.C, but these days he falls pretty easily on the football pitch. May be it’s age or something has got to do with his boots. Please change your boots mister, before it make you look more clumsy.

Notification FE # 1

Hi Fanatics,

Football Editorials welcomes all soccer fans in India or anywhere in the world to contribute to this blog by providing Editorials and write-ups.

As mentioned in our introductory letter,

This is not a strictly administered blog, it's for fans(across the globe) to scribble it, and I request you to participate and provide your most valuable and meaningful insights

Partner this blog by providing your priceless feedbacks and comments. The Blues are 2 points clear at the top of the premier league table, from their near rival’s Manchester United and going by their squad's list (except Michael Ballack injury concerns) they will set up a strong team at the Villa Park.

No new injury concerns for the Villains Boss Martin O’Neill and would like to see his team continue good home form. It will be a difficult task for the Villians to hold Chelsea as they will too strong especially upfront with the likes of Didier Drogba and Nicoklas Anelka.

FE Desk: 1-2 (Conservative Prediction)

Arsenal v Birmingham

Last time, when the away team were at Emirates Stadium, the Gunners trash their opponents by 6-2. What’s in store this time for Wenger's Boys? No new injury concerns for Arsene Wenger and looking at Cecs Fabregas, recent form, it will be interesting to see if Alex McLeish can overcome an inform Arsenal side or succumb to a heavy defeat.

After their two 'accidental defeats' as described by Mr. Arsene Wenger, the Gunners have bounced back, and they have played some scintillating and breath taking football. Arsenal fans would love, a repeat of previous game, and hope that they blasts some goals during this Diwali.

FE Desk: 3-1 (Moderate Prediction)

Manchester United V Bolton Wanderers

Sir Alex Ferguson is in some sort of crisis – Wayne Rooney out due to injury problems, Dimitar Berbatov not available for the game, it will be interesting to see if Michael Owen can overcome this debacle. After a poor show against Sunderland and Sir Alex Ferguson controversial remarks on the referee, the Red Devils needs to win and make a stylish comeback.

It won’t be easy to beat Gary Megson's Bolton side that is known for their set plays and are a physical side. Sir Alex Ferguson recently said that Rio Ferdinand needs to raise his game and the same applies to the team. There seems to be something missing for the Red Devils (this season), after the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, and Manchester United needs to buck up and perform as per their standards.

FE Desk: 2-0 (Moderate Prediction)

Sunderland V Liverpool

No Steven Gerrard, No Fernando Torres, you’re kidding?

What a massive blow to the Mersey side club, before their trip to the Stadium of Lights. Steve Bruce will be hoping to see his team a repeat of Old Trafford performance. However, can the Black Cats encore their performance?

The Reds have already lost three games and will have to lift their game without their two key players. Liverpool has not conceded any goals against Sunderland since 2002, but this time it will be a different outing for Liverpool – facing an inform Sunderland team, running high on confidence.

FE Desk: 1-1 (Aggressive Prediction)

Wigan Athletic V Manchester City

The Latics have won their last two home games against Chelsea and West Ham United, on the other hand Manchester City have lost only once at the hands of their city rivals in Manchester Derby, this season.

Mark Hughes will have a headache of selecting his backline due to injury problems to players like Kolo Toure, Pablo Zabaleta, Joleon Lescott and Nedum Onuoha. On the other had Roberto Martinez has a clean bill of health. The Sky Blues has a lot of narrow wins this season and seems that they will be replicating their previous performance once again. Mark Hughes has already had a superb start to this campaign, currently fourth on the premier league table, with a game in hand.

FE Desk: 0-1 (Conservative Prediction)

So sit back and Enjoy with your Popcorn!!!

Happy Diwali From The Desk

Hi Fanatics,

Wishing you a prosperous and auspicious Diwali. Whether the desire to achieve instant success is forcing various clubs to incur massive debt?

I would like to elucidate by stating some facts:

As per Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance 2009 report gross transfer spending across the 92 top professional clubs grew to £779m in 2007/08, up 35% from 2006/07, the vast majority was spent by Premier League clubs – £664m (2006/07: £492m)

A recent example is cash rich English club Manchester City, who has spent over £220 million in last 12 months, on signing new players. The debate of excessive spending has drawn special attention in the opinions of the managers and owners across the world. Is the takeover of clubs by foreign business tycoon, wants to achieve quick success, disturbing the game? Yes, I believe the commercial aspect and business minded people running these clubs is affecting the game. Due to large chuck of money infused into the game, the ‘Beautiful Game’ is hounded by issues like tapping up. It is a known fact that a manager admires a player, and later he tries to persuade the player via his agent without the knowledge of his current team. Take an example of Ashley Cole saga or most recent alleged Joleon Lescott suggest that it is a phenomenon in high profile leagues across Europe.

UEFA president Michel Platini announced that owner of Chelsea Football Club Roman Abramovich is backing UEFA’s spending cap plan. The plan prevents clubs from spending excessively on transfers, which will help to reduce their huge debts. It is strange, as the man who spends over £700 million in past six years and having a debt of around £730 million, is interested in backing UEFA’s plan.

Should UEFA Regulate spending? Yes they should. Remember, Joga Bonito (Play Beautifully) movement initiated by Nike and Google, in order to prevent unfair and unsportsmanlike play from the football. The game would be affected if the large chunk of money will keep pouring in. The ‘Beautiful Game’ needs to be protected from excessive transaction, which endangers the clubs to incur heavy debts, further it affects the growth of young and talented players.

I admire Arsene Wenger’s philosophy of grooming young players and protect the development of new talents. If the club focuses on buying, then it would least be concentrate on development of young players, which comes through their academy. There is no shortcut to success, and most important you cannot compromise on the ethics and values of the ‘Beautiful Game’.

The new proposal of UEFA president Michel Platini states that clubs can only spend what they earn in revenue, and any club that doesn't balance the books within three years would face expulsion from European competitions. I believe current the plan is robust, which will help to regulate excessive spending and protect club from huge debts. It will help to eliminate the gap between ‘Big Clubs’ and others, which will benefit the game. The support from clubs across Europe is important and recent backings from high profile owners like Roman Abramovich (Chelsea), Silvio Berlusconi (Milan) and Massimo Moratti (Inter) will help to implement the plan.

This year Spanish Giants Real Madrid and English Club Manchester City has splashed a combined £300 million to strengthen their respective squads. These cash rich clubs are using every trick inorder to persuade a player away from their respective clubs. It is ridiculous to spend £80 million for a player or spending over £150 million during a transfer window, because in future it will affect the ‘Beautiful Game’.

It is not the responsibility of UEFA, but the FA should come forward to prevent such excessive spending via Salary Cap. Similar system works in Major League Baseball (MSB) where they have implemented Salary Cap Policy successfully, which helps to keep the lower cost and ensure parity between team. There might be various road blocks to implement this policy in football; a formula must be achieved to regulate such massive transaction.

You might call it ‘Financial Doping’ (Arsene Wenger) or ‘Excessive spending’, but the fact remains that we need to prevent in order to:

a. To protect young talent and ensure development of new talents

b. To protect clubs from running into huge debts

c. To help achieve parity between clubs

What do you think? Please share your thoughts

Debate: Is Premier League a Two-Horse Title Race?

By Jigar Shah

We are only 6 weeks into the start of the new premier league season 2009-10 and Michael Ballack is already predicting the fate of Premier League. At a recent press conference, the German mid-fielder was in a mood to share his gyan on the various Premier League clubs and was quick to reckon that premier league is a ‘two-horse race’ i.e Chelsea and Manchester United.

Michael Ballack has his own theory for making such assessment, but I believe it is too early to fancy any team as clear favorites or branding premier league as ‘Two-Horse title race’, especially after Chelsea dropping points at the weekend. Bravo! What a performance from the Latics, from perennial underdogs to stunning winners, an incredible way to register your first win over ‘Big Four’ in 35 games, and yes, who would have predicted that score line? Chelsea’s defeat shows that the Blues are not ‘invincible’ and this defeat throws premier league title race wide open.

Last season Manchester United repeated a hat-trick of winning Premier League, previously winning three consecutive league titles during the period 1998-99 to 2000-01. Manchester United has always been a team to beat in the premier league. They have already won 11 out of 17 premier league titles, which clearly reflect their dominance in the Premier League. So can I say premier league is one horse race? Certainly not!

In the last few years, English Premier League has always been a battle among four clubs – Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United. I am sure, with the emergence of mega-cash rich club Manchester City, there will be more drama and excitement in store for the premier league fans across the world. In fact, few managers, including Martin O’Neill reckons that the Premier League Big Four is now a Big Five!

There is another prognosis, as some section of the fans and experts reiterates that premier league is a battle among two clubs i.e Chelsea and Manchester United. Have a glance at league standings: Chelsea and Manchester United have the same number of points (18) and Liverpool and Spurs are three points a drift from the league leader. Manchester City is fifth on the league table (15 points) with one game in hand and Arsenal is sixth on the league standing (12 points) with one game in hand as well. This elucidates that there is very little to choose between these clubs, at this juncture.

I know Chelsea has been ruthless since the start of the season, but they can be defeated, especially after the weekend. Even Manchester United has experienced a shock defeat at the hands of Burnley, which suggest that they can be defeated as well.

This shows that the gap between Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, is not big enough to say that premier league is a ‘Two-Horse title Race’. The aura of invincibility, no longer exists in the premier league which makes the league far more interesting and exciting to watch.

The Blues have a very strong team, going forward; they possess powerful forwards like Didier Drogba and last season top goal scorer Nicolas Anelka. Chelsea probably has incredible and perhaps one of the best ever assembled world class midfielders like Michael Essien, Michael Ballack, Frank Lampard, John Obi Mikel and Deco. The midfield is backed by world class and mean backline like Ashley Cole, Jose Bosingwa, Ricardo Carvalho and John Terry. Chelsea certainly has the edge, but they are not clear favorites to win the premier league.

On the other hand, the Red Devils have lost European Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, who played an instrumental role during last three seasons with Manchester United, and the Argentine ace Carlos Tevez during the summer. It will be difficult to replace a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, and a lot will depend upon players like Wayne Rooney, Nani, Dimitar Berbatov, Michael Owen and veterans like Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs. One thing that favors the Red Devils is their experience, consistency, never-say-dying attitude and the most important of all - Sir Alex Ferguson. He is the mastermind behind the tremendous success that Manchester United has enjoyed over 20 years.

I believe teams like Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester City, has the repertoire and quality to compete with Chelsea and Manchester United. It will be a crime to underestimate these teams and leave them out from the premier league title race.

For instance, teams like Arsenal has to start performing consistency and develop a winning mentality, especially grinding out 1-0 victories, like they did over Fulham at the weekend.

Liverpool has a fabulous squad, but it will be difficult to replace someone like Xabi Alonso, in the heart of the mid-field, which might prove very costly for them this season. Much will depend on their Captain Steven Gerrard and priceless striker Fernando Torres, who is in the form of his life.

Mega cash rich Manchester City already has a fabulous start and has demonstrated they can compete against big teams (after their performance against Manchester United and Arsenal) will surely be a dominant force in the premier league.

To conclude, Chelsea looks to have the edge; Manchester United remains a team to beat, Arsenal back to their free-flowing football, Liverpool relishing their superb goal scoring form and Manchester City has the depth and quality to grind out the results which makes the premier league very exiting and competitive.

If I had the money, I would not dare to place a bet on any team; because in football anything can happen, and it’s too early to predict or forecast the fate of the premier league.

I will not dare to say Premier League as ‘Two-Horse Title Race’!

Premier League Top Shopper - In Last One Year

By Jigar Shah

Ever since the trend of takeover in last 4-5 years, the premier league clubs have been a generous spendthrift. Personally, I stumble whenever I hear the transfer fees, its nothing to be proud of, a sheer commercial aspect involved and big dreams of winning titles are forcing these clubs to incur heavy debts. As per Deloitte Annual Review of Football Finance 2009 report suggested that the net debt in respect of Premier League clubs increased to £3.1 billion in 2007/08 up from £2.7 billion the previous season.

Premier League is the most attractive league in the world, and they are one of the biggest spenders when it comes to shopping. Here is the list of top premier league spenders in last 12 months.

Manchester City £220million

The richest club on the planet, after the takeover by Abu Dhabi United Group, tops the list of the biggest spenders in the premier league. The club has spent over £220million in signing a host of players. The ambitious dream of the owner Sheikh Mansour has made the sky Blues to spend heavily in building their squad.

The club major signings are on players like Nigel De Jong (£16 million), Emmanuel Adebayor (£25 million), Carlos Tevez (£22 million), Wayne Bridge (£14 million), Roque Santa Cruz (£17.5 million) , Vincent Kompany (£6 million), Joleon Lescott (£24 million), Kolo Toure (£16 million), Gareth Barry (£12 million), Jo (£18 million) and Robinho (£32.5 million)

The sky blues should not forget that money can’t buy everything, and they will have to perform well on the field in order to win trophies.

Spurs £101million

Premier League’s most under achieved club has spent significant money in the transfer window to finish second on the list. Since taking the charge of spurs last year, Harry Redknapp has made incredible signings.

Spurs major signing are on players like Jermain Defoe (£16 million), David Bentley (£15 million), Roman Pavlyuchenko (£14 million), Robbie Keane (£12 million), Wilson Palacios (£12 million), Peter Crouch (£10million) and Sebastien Bassong (£8 million).

The manager has made several signings and surely this should help them to achieve their European dream this term.

Manchester United £76million

After the sale of Cristiano Ronaldo to Real Madrid for a whopping € 93 million, Manchester Untied is reluctant to spend the entire amount on signing new players. The Red devils are third on our list, considering Sir Alex Ferguson has spent approx £76.3million in last 12 months. The clubs major signing was on signing Dimitar Berbatov (£32.5 million) and Antonio Valencia (£16 million). It will be interesting to see, if the club can fill the huge gap, due to the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez.

Aston Villa £62 million

The rise of Aston Villa under Martin O’ Neill cannot be ignored. The Lions have spent significantly in the last 12 month, approx £62 million, in signing host of players. The major ones are Richard Dunne (£6 million), Stewart Downing (£10 million), Steve Sidwell (£5 million), Stephen Warnock (£7 million), Emile Heskey (£3.5 million), Luke Young (£8 million), and Carlos Cuéllar (£8 million). The club has made good signing in recent transfer windows and the progress under the Irish will be inevitable.

Liverpool £54million

Departure of Xabi Alonso might be irreplaceable, but Rafael Benitez has made decent signing in last one year. The Merseyside club has brought players like Glen Johnson (£18 million), Alberto Aquilani (£17million), and Albert Riera (£8million) to strengthen their squad. There might be rumors of financial crunch around the club, although the Reds have managed to spend roughly £35 million in the summer.

(Note: Robbie Keane is not included, considering he was sold immediately. Robbie was brought by Liverpool for £20 million)

Arsenal £41million

Wenger is a shrewd tactician when it comes to spending money in the transfer market. The Gunners are not known for their heavy spending. Although they have managed to sign club record signing Andrei Arshavin (£15 million), Thomas Vermaelen (£10 million) and Samir Nasri (£13 million). Due to Arsene Wenger’s transfer philosophy, the gunners have managed to finish sixth.

Chelsea £36million

Surprisingly, the Blues are last on our list of premier leagues biggest spenders. Since the departure of Jose Mourinho, approx spending under his reign was £220 million, the Pensioners transfer bill has fallen in the recent seasons. The Club has spent on Nemanja Matic (£1.5 million), Yuri Zhirkov (£18 million) and Jose Bosingwa (£16.3 million). The blues already has a big squad and will be looking forward to making most of the available resource under new manager Carlos Ancelotti.

Debate: Are Spain The Best Team In The World?

By Jigar Shah

European champions booked their place in the World Cup Finals with an impressive win over Estonia and maintained their 100 percent record. Eight wins from eight games in the world cup qualifying games, is a fantastic stat to label La Furia Roja as one of the favorites to win FIFA World Cup 2010 in Africa. Spain is the third team to maintain 100 percent record after England and Netherlands netting 21 times and conceding only twice.

From ‘The Great Underachievers’ to Football Winners

The European Champions have never won a world cup, in fact, they have only managed to reach the Quarter Finals and during 2006 FIFA World Cup, they were knocked out by France in the round of 16. Argentine World Cup winning coach Cesar Menotti once famously said that Spain would never win anything at the international level until they decided if they wanted to be "the bull or the bullfighter".

The Spanish shrugged aside their underachievers tag to win the EURO 2008 championship, winning a trophy after 44 years in their history. ‘Joga Bonito’ is the right phrase to describe Spanish team, which is full of quality, technique, entertainment and most important winning games aesthetically.

Is Vincent Del Bosque the right man?

Vincent Del Bosque should be happy man with the Spanish team performance, after losing out in Confederation Cup in the semis to America. He is the first manager in the football history to win his first 10 games as a debut manager and a record of 13 winning streaks, eventually ending with a defeat at the hands of America in the semis of Confederation Cup 2009. The former Real Madrid coach has a brilliant record as a manager of Spanish National Team.

The gaffer has done an incredible job with the team, because at times is difficult to pick the right team from the options available, but he has managed to put the best team. He has given an opportunity to young talented players like Bojan Krkic, Sergio Busquets, Diego Capel and Cecs Fabregas, which shows that he is not over reliant on the first team players. There are a lot of expectations from the team, and it will be interesting to see if the manager delivers the result.

The Squad

The Spanish squad is probably the best in the history of its National Team, and it is a team of highly talented superstars. The Connoisseurs will be happy to sit back and enjoy the repertoire of skills on display and would love to admire the pleasure of watching skillful man to torment and destroy opponents at their own pace. The team has a good mixture of young and experience players, a winning combination, and the most important thing is that the perennial underachievers are ready to deliver at a big stage.

SWOT Analysis

Spanish team recent success is due to their creative and brilliant midfield. Arguably, the best crop of midfielders in the world is playing in the Spanish national side. Players like Xavi Hernandez, Xabi Alonso, Marcos Senna, David Silva, Andres Iniesta and Cecs Fabregas are all capable of destroying the opponents with ease. The flair and technique possessed by the skillful players is what making the Spanish team a dangerous side in the world.

Their weakness lies in their mentality and this is the only difference between Brazil samba Boys and Spanish side. The defeat against America in the semis by 2-0 would suffice as an apt example, where you expect Spanish side to nail their opponents instead they succumb to pressure, which was not the case with Brazil.

The biggest opportunity with Vincent Del Bosque is to capitalize on the pool of largely talented players available to him. He should get most from his gifted midfielders and the players like David Villa and Fernando Torres, one of the best striking pairs in the top form; it should not be a difficult task to win the trophies.

The Kings of Europe might be the most envious team in the world but there are teams that might prove to be a serious roadblock to La Furia Roja’s world cup winning dreams. The biggest threat will be Brazil followed by in form teams like England, Germany and Netherlands.

Conclusion

Vincent Del Bosque should not get uneasy with the favorite tag, and he should manage to get the best out of the current Spanish side. The only worry would be overcome complacency, and it should not repeat the mistakes made by Brazil in FIFA World Cup 2006. The squad has enough quality and depth, if mixed with strong winning mentality; they are surely favorites to win the FIFA World Cup 2010 in Africa.

Please share your thoughts and who according to you are favorites to win FIFA World Cup 2010!!!

The Rise and Rise of Ryan Giggs

By Jigar Shah

I am short of words to describe this ‘Genius’ called Ryan Giggs.

Ryan Joseph Giggs, a legend who has devoted his entire career to Manchester United and still going strong. He is a benchmark to many young and aspirant footballers. The Welshmen is well known for his attitude, performance, loyalty and respect which he has earned over his 20 long years of professional career. He believes in performance rather than talking.

At 35, he is playing the best form of his life, which is a rare quality to come across in the modern day football. Today, when most of the players think about their retirement, from top level, the Genius from Wales is ready to add another milestone to an already illustrious and glorious career at Old Trafford.

On 29 November 1990 Ryan Giggs turned professional footballer and was hailed as one of the finest talents in English Football since George Best. On 4 May 1991, Giggsy in his first full start in a Manchester Derby was awarded with a goal (debatable goal) – his first goal for the Red Devils. In a very short span of time, Giggsy became ‘Premiership First Poster Boy’ and the player who ruled on millions of hearts of Manchester United fans.

Even today, his ‘wonder goal’ against Arsenal in the FA cup semi-finals, still lingers on the minds of thousands of fans across the world. I still remember the emotional celebration after the goal, as Giggsy whipped his short of, whirling it around his head and running all the way back to the half-line. Perhaps, the defining moment came when Giggsy set up an equalizer to Teddy Sheringham, in 1999 UEFA Champions League Final against German powerhouse Bayern Munich, winning the game in the injury time by 2-1, making a memorable treble winning season for Manchester United.

Giggsy has played 813 games for the Red Devils, in all competitions, and still counting, surpassing Sir Bobby Charlton record of most appearances for Manchester United. His inspiring career is full of individual and club honors.

Giggsy has won just about everything in the game. Have a look at his medals - 11 League titles, 7 Community Shield, 4 F.A cup, 3 League Cup, 2 Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and Intercontinental Cup. His majestic performance, last season, won him PFA Player of the Year.

‘Midas touch’ – is all I can say about Giggsy performance at the Britannia Stadium and later during the mid week against VfL Wolfsburg scoring his 150th goal for the club. The Welshmen continues his remarkable form on the pitch, this season, and he is marching in the right direction. Last month he scored a beautiful free-kick at White Hart Lane, suggest that this Old Guard still has the arsenal to compete at the highest level. The inglorious Nani should take some tips from this living legend rather than Cristiano Ronaldo.

Giggsy is getting smarter and sharper, these days; his attributes like precision passing, sublime touch, accurate reading, hard work and impeccable professionalism are highly commendable. True he is aging, has even dropped few paces, but he improves his game every week.

Even after achieving oodles of success, Giggsy is modest to say that he gets inspired from youngsters like Cristiano Ronaldo, Rafael, Wayne Rooney and all the youngsters coming through the academy at Old Trafford.

Last season, he made 45 appearances for the Red Devils, in all competitions, which reflects the commitment from the Genius. I must say, at 35, he is playing like 17, which might lend him another PFA Young Player award!

Giggsy has played a huge part in the success of Manchester United, over the years, and he still remains a vital figure in Manchester United plan of winning trophies. Sir Alex Ferguson is very clever to deploy him a deeper role and Giggsy have adapted to his new position very well. The gaffer believes that Ryan Giggs deserves a knighthood and rightly so. On 29 April 2009, Manchester United fans have launched an online petition to nominate Ryan Giggs for knighthood. It’s a great gesture by Manchester United fans, to pay tribute to their legend, so better get use to saying ‘Sir Ryan Giggs’ in future.

The most decorated player in English football history and the best left wing mid-fielder from Manchester United is truly irreplaceable. I would like to end with a quote by Jose Mourinho, who once rightly said that ‘Ryan Giggs is the Best Ever EPL Player’.
